Catch Rates for White Marlin (tetrapturus Albidus) and Blue Marlin (makaira Nigricans) from the Small-scale Fishery off La Guaira, Venezuela: Period 1991-2004

چکیده
Catch rates from 1991 to 2004 for white marlin (Tetrapturus albidus) and blue marlin (Makaira nigricans) from the small scale fishery off La Guaira, Venezuela (a billfish hot-spot) were standardized by Generalized Liner Model techniques. The index of weight of fish per number of sets was estimated from dressed weight of marlins caught and reported by port sampling in the fishing community of Playa Verde. The analysis included the variables year and season (by quarters).

Fishery Stock Assessment Models
Historically, stock assessments of Atlantic blue marlin (Makaira nigricans) and white marlin (Tetrapturus albidus), conducted under the auspices of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), have been restricted to production modeling approaches. Production models are used due to the unique fisheries and biological aspects of the species which result in a pauci...
متن کاملGENETIC ANALySIS OF WhITE MARLIN
The genetic basis of stock structure of white marlin (Tetrapturus albidus Poey, 1860) was inferred from analyses of five tetranucleotide repeat microsatellite loci (n = 214) and the mitochondrial (mt)DNA control region (n = 99) of white marlin from four geographic regions in the Atlantic Ocean. Considerable genetic variation was present in all collections for all molecular markers. Analysis of ...
متن کاملApplication of pop-up satellite archival tag technology to estimate postrelease survival of white marlin (Tetrapturus albidus) caught on circle and straight-shank (“J”) hooks in the western North Atlantic recreational fishery*
Atlantic white marlin (Tetrapturus albidus Poey, 1860) are targeted by a directed recreational fishery and occur as incidental bycatch in commercial fisheries throughout the warm pelagic waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Total reported recreational and commercial landings of white marlin peaked at 4911 metric tons (t) in the mid-1960s, declined steadily during the next 15 years, and have since fluc...
متن کاملSurvival of white marlin ( Tetrapturus albidus ) released from commercial pelagic longline gear in the western North Atlantic
To estimate postrelease survival of white marlin (Tetrapturus albidus) caught incidentally in regular commercial pelagic longline fishing operations targeting swordfish and tunas, short-duration popup satellite archival tags (PSATs) were deployed on captured animals for periods of 5−43 days. Twenty (71.4%) of 28 tags transmitted data at the preprogrammed time, including one tag that separated f...
متن کاملHabitat utilization and vertical movements of white marlin (Tetrapturus albidus) released from commercial and recreational fishing gears in the western North Atlantic Ocean: inferences from short duration pop-up archival satellite tags
Researchers have applied numerous techniques to improve billfish stock assessments, including habitatbased models that incorporate behavioral and oceanographic parameters to standardize historical catch-per-unit-effort time-series data. These methods have allowed researchers to account for significant changes in the depths of pelagic longline (PLL) gear deployments over time. This study present...
